Recent Ceramic work

I use silhouette cut-outs with glaze and underglaze decoration.  The cut-outs provide shadows and blank places where the clay body is animated with figure shapes from photographs, drawings, and sculpture. I have drawn the shapes as silhouettes to allow interplay with shape texture and colour on my hand made forms.

Many of the cut-out forms, refer to female figure studies.  The female figure in art history has held a central space as a repository of assumptions made about the female subject’s feeling, intention, potential, imagination, bodily predicament, etc. in my work, these forms mime an internal recognition of my own assumptions about the female body.

The figures lead me to question the meaning of their poses and to insert my imagined story. It’s a kind of stilled animation.

Colour and texture are the fingerprints I leave on my handmade forms.
